Big savings open new markets in drilled profile cut plate. The recent purchase of a CMA-CNC drilling machine by a major plate supplier has created new business. Previously it was possible to offer holes drilled in plates if they were needed by customers, but with only two radial arm drilling machines, this was not very profitable and could create a bottleneck to output.
The new travelling gantry machine from CMA shows an output may times greater, making holes makes money and the much greater drilling capacity attracts new work and new customers.
The benefits of this machine show in the following areas:
simple programming is much quicker than marking out and only has to be done once;
automatic positioning faster than the most dedicated operator;
the machine can use carbide drills with through coolant, typically drilling 30mm dia through 30mm plate in 10 seconds;
machine capacity is rated at 40mm dia but recent developments in modular drills make 50mm dia in one pass possible.
